The 39th Scientific Advisory Committee meeting held at Hiroshima RERF
|
The 39th Scientific Advisory Committee met for three days on March 5–7 at RERF in Hiroshima. Consisting of 10 external members selected from the U.S. and Japan, the committee meets once a year to review RERF's research progress and plans. RERF conducts its research activities based on recommendations provided by the committee.
Since considerable time would be required to conduct extensive review for all of RERF’s research departments at one time, a review system, under which only certain departments are subject to detailed review, is employed. This year, focused review was conducted of the Departments of Genetics and Radiobiology/Molecular Epidemiology. For this reason, one U.S. and two Japanese experts in the relevant fields participated in the meeting as Special Scientific Advisors, in addition to the permanent Scientific Advisors.
The meeting proceeded as usual with greetings and reports by the RERF Chairman and Vice Chairman, followed by presentations on research projects by the chiefs and research scientists from the Departments of Genetics and Radiobiology/Molecular Epidemiology as well as question-and-answer sessions. Subsequently, presentations by the chiefs of other departments and those on RERF’s future plans and matters related to the Fukushima nuclear accident were provided, followed by extensive discussion between the scientists and the Scientific Advisors. While summary recommendations were presented on the last day of the meeting, formal recommendations will be submitted at a later date.
